Battle Belt Setup That's Trusted to Work for You
As an instructor and Armed Nuclear Security Officer who's spent over twenty years using gear daily, I’ve seen firsthand how gear truly performs in real-world situations. I've compiled a list of essentials I trust for those looking to invest in equipment that lasts and serves your protection needs. These offer flexibility for different magazine sizes, from pistol-caliber carbines to standard rifles like .223/5.56mm or 7.62mm magazine systems.
Many people have overdone their setup for carbine classes, but with this curated list, you'll get exactly what you need without the excess. Remember, this gear is focused on a battle belt setup for practical rifle use, not a dual-use handgun belt. You can add a holster if you want. Personally, handgun use is focused on Concealed Carry and the by-product of participating in IDPA, so there is no need for a "battle belt with a handgun" for me.
I have used all of these items for years, and they still serve me well. My HSGI Tacos are Generation 1 from 2011 and still work very well.
Here’s my go-to setup for a rifle range belt:
Two-Part Belt System
An inner belt that threads through your pants’ loops, and an outer MOLLE belt attached via Velcro. This design keeps the belt steady during training, preventing slippage. My top picks include:
-
5.11 Belt https://amzn.to/3BvdhMk
Great value, and if you’re in North Carolina, you can visit a 5.11 store to try one on.
-
High Speed Gear Taco https://amzn.to/3Bq3iYU
No more than three Taco’s are needed. I prefer at least one be a Double Decker Taco; I would replace the pistol mag in the image below with a Multi-tool.
- Maxpedition Mini Rollypoly Folding Dump Pouch https://amzn.to/3Y3yLcj Perfectly sized for 3x-AR or 4xScorpion mags
-
NAR Individual Patrol Officer Kit https://amzn.to/4eF2j5k
Every class I teach emphasizes the importance of medical readiness, and this "blow-out kit" is a must-have for any self-protector.
-
Maxpedition Fatty Pocket Organizer https://amzn.to/3N7sJRz
A compact, efficient way to store the medical kit without adding unnecessary bulk.
As of 29 Sept 2024, the total price on Amazon is $365.11 for this belt setup.
