Teach With Competence. Lead With Responsibility.
If you care about the 2nd amendment, you already understand responsibility.
Becoming an NRA Certified Instructor is the next step — not just in skill, but in leadership. It’s about developing the ability to teach others safe, structured, and lawful firearm handling with confidence and clarity.
At Trace Armory Group, we approach instructor development the same way we approach defensive training:
Measured. Accountable. Professional.

What It Takes to Qualify
To become an NRA Instructor, candidates must:
- Complete the student-level course in the discipline they wish to teach
- Demonstrate safe, competent firearm handling
- Complete NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT) within the last 24 months (this course)
- Successfully pass the discipline-specific Instructor Course and receive endorsement
Instructor certification is performance-based.
- You do not pay and automatically pass.
- You pay for the opportunity to demonstrate competence.
NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT)
BIT is the mandatory foundation for all NRA Instructor certifications.
This 6-hour course teaches the instructional principles common to every NRA discipline and prepares you to teach the NRA way.
BIT Focus Areas:
- Instructor responsibilities and NRA policies
- Teaching methods and student learning styles
- Organizing and preparing to conduct a course
BIT does not certify you to teach a discipline. It prepares you for the discipline-specific Instructor Course.
If you have not completed BIT within the last two years, it must be completed prior to certification.
Discipline-Specific Instructor Courses
After BIT, candidates complete the Instructor Course in their chosen discipline (Pistol, Rifle, or Shotgun).
During the course, you will:
- Learn and apply NRA instructional methodology
- Deliver portions of the course through structured role-play
- Demonstrate safe firearm handling and clear communication
Training is conducted by Bob McClure our on staff NRA Training Counselor who evaluate performance based on safety, professionalism, and adherence to lesson plans.
