When Distance Changes the Problem

Most defensive handgun training focuses on close-range personal protection.

Defending another person can create a different problem. You may be 15, 25, 40, or even 50 yards away, with cover available, people moving through the area, and a background that must be evaluated before a shot is taken.

In Defense of Others: Pistolcraft is designed around that problem.

This course develops the handgun skills, positioning, and decision-making needed to work from greater distance while maintaining accountability for every shot.

The Problem Starts Before the First Shot

The goal is not simply to shoot a handgun farther.

Before firing, you need to solve several problems:

  • Can you improve your position?
  • Can you use cover or concealment?
  • Can you clearly identify the threat?
  • What is around and beyond the target?
  • Is an accountable shot actually available?
  • What level of accuracy can you produce from that distance?

The course teaches a deliberate process for answering those questions.

The Training Process

1. Find Cover or Concealment

Improve your position before trying to solve the shooting problem.

Students learn to reduce unnecessary exposure, use available cover or concealment, and establish a position that provides a better opportunity to observe, decide, and act.

2. Assess the Target and Backstop

Seeing the threat is not enough.

You must also evaluate what is around and beyond it. Students work on recognizing whether an accountable shot is available and understanding how movement can quickly change that decision.

3. Establish Accuracy

Students build and measure handgun accuracy from approximately 15 to 50 yards.

Distance exposes errors that may be difficult to see at closer ranges and provides a realistic picture of current capability.

4. Develop Tempo

Tempo is the rate at which you can deliver accurate, accountable shots based on distance, target difficulty, stability, and available time.

The goal is not simply to shoot faster. The goal is to maintain the fastest useful tempo without sacrificing the required accuracy.

5. Build Accountable Shot Strings

Defensive shooting is not always a predetermined one-shot or two-shot problem.

Students learn to maintain accuracy through controlled strings of fire while continuing to evaluate the threat, surroundings, and results.

6. Understand the Engagement Window

An opportunity to act may exist only briefly.

The threat can move. The background can change. Another person can enter the line of fire.

Students learn to recognize when an accountable opportunity exists—and when changing circumstances mean that opportunity has ended.

7. Measure Your Capability

The final goal is knowing what you can actually do.

At a given distance, from a specific position, with the support available:

  • What level of accuracy can you maintain?
  • What tempo can you sustain?
  • How does support change your performance?
  • Where do your current limits begin?

What You’ll Work On

Know What You Can Do Before You Depend on It

This course is not designed to convince you that every difficult situation requires intervention.

It is designed to help you understand what happens when distance, positioning, other people, and the background make the handgun problem more demanding.

You should leave with a clearer understanding of your accuracy, your tempo, how support affects your performance, and where your current limits exist.

Position first. Backstop before trigger. Accuracy before tempo. Accountability throughout.

Replace Luck with Skill.

Be Ready When It Matters.
