Train With Purpose. Own the Night.
When the sun goes down, the environment changes. Distances become more difficult to judge. Identifying people and objects becomes harder. Decision-making slows as visual information disappears. Yet most responsible firearm owners have never trained to use their firearm in the conditions where defensive encounters are statistically most likely to occur.
Trace Armory Group's Nightfighter course is a four-hour live-fire training program designed to teach responsible armed citizens how to safely and effectively operate in limited-light conditions. Students may attend with a defensive handgun, defensive carbine, or defensive shotgun, allowing them to build confidence with the firearm they actually rely on for personal or home defense.
Training takes place at Woody's Rifle Club in New Hill, North Carolina, conveniently serving students from Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Durham, Chapel Hill, Pittsboro, Sanford, Southern Pines, Fayetteville, and throughout Central North Carolina.
Why Train in Low Light?
Owning a flashlight is not the same as knowing how to use one.
Whether mounted to your firearm or carried in your pocket, a flashlight is a decision-making tool before it is a shooting tool. Every responsible firearm owner is accountable for identifying what they are looking at before making decisions that could have life-changing consequences.
Low-light environments introduce challenges that cannot be replicated during daylight training. Reduced visibility, shadows, reflections, and visual distractions all affect your ability to observe, orient, decide, and act.
This course develops practical skills that help you safely integrate handheld and weapon-mounted lights into your personal defensive plan.
Choose the Firearm You Trust
Students complete the entire course using one firearm platform.
Choose the firearm you actually depend on:
- Defensive Handgun
- Defensive Carbine or PCC
- Defensive Shotgun
Our coaching and drills are adapted to each platform while maintaining the same learning objectives and performance standards.
What You'll Learn
Nightfighter is built around practical defensive skills—not simply shooting in the dark.
Throughout the course, students develop the ability to:
- Safely operate a firearm in limited-light conditions
- Positively identify potential threats before engaging
- Employ handheld flashlight techniques
- Use weapon-mounted lights effectively
- Understand when light should—and should not—be used
- Manage photonic barriers and visual distractions
- Shoot accurately under reduced visibility
- Work from cover and unconventional shooting positions
- Perform reloads and clear malfunctions in low light
- Move safely while maintaining muzzle discipline
- Communicate effectively during low-light scenarios
- Integrate low-light skills into a responsible defensive plan
Students receive individual coaching while progressing through structured live-fire exercises that reinforce safe gun handling, accountability, and practical performance.
Challenging Common Low-Light Myths
Many shooters assume that installing a weapon-mounted light automatically prepares them for defensive encounters after dark.
Reality is more complicated.
Throughout this course, students will challenge common low-light assumptions while learning practical techniques that can be safely applied outside the training environment.
Training includes:
- Threat identification
- Unknown contact management
- Student talk-backs and communication
- Adverse shooting positions
- Light discipline
- Positive target identification
- Practical decision-making under reduced visibility
Our objective is simple:
Provide responsible firearm owners with practical, repeatable skills that can safely and efficiently become part of their personal defensive plan.
Course Prerequisites
Nightfighter is not an introductory firearms course.
Students must already possess safe firearm handling skills and be capable of operating their chosen firearm without basic instruction.
To attend this course, students must:
- Show proof of recognized firearms training (NRA, USCCA, Trace Armory Group alumni, Law Enforcement, Military, or equivalent)
- Understand and demonstrate safe firearm handling
- Follow all range commands and safety procedures
- Safely employ their firearm throughout live-fire exercises
North Carolina Concealed Carry certification alone does not satisfy this prerequisite.
Students who cannot safely handle their firearm may be removed from training for the safety of everyone on the range.

Suppressors Encouraged
If you own a suppressor for your firearm, please bring it.
Suppressors can improve communication between students and instructors while reducing noise and fatigue during low-light training. They are welcome but not required.
Train With the Gear You Actually Use
Nightfighter is designed for responsibly armed citizens—not equipment demonstrations.
Students are encouraged to train with the firearm, holster, flashlight, and support gear they realistically use for concealed carry or home defense.
Full-duty belts, tactical load-bearing equipment, and military-style gear are discouraged unless they represent your normal occupational equipment as law enforcement, military, or armed security.
The goal is practical performance with equipment you are likely to use when it matters most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a suppressor?
Absolutely. Suppressors are encouraged if you own one, but they are not required.
Can I switch between handgun and carbine during class?

Train for the Conditions You Can't Control
You don't get to choose the lighting conditions during a defensive encounter.
Training after dark develops a different level of awareness, accountability, and confidence than daytime practice alone.
If you carry a firearm to protect yourself or the people you care about, train for the conditions where responsible decision-making matters most.
Confidence comes from competence. Train with purpose at Trace Armory Group's Nightfighter course at Woody's Rifle Club in New Hill, North Carolina.
