Course Overview

This 4-hour Designated Marksman course focuses on developing advanced marksmanship skills for law enforcement officers tasked with precision shooting. The course covers target engagement up to 600 yards, emphasizing accurate shooting under various conditions, target identification, and environmental factors. Officers will confirm their rifle's data on previous engagements (DOPE) from 10 to 600 yards and participate in an FBI 100-yard qualification.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, officers will:

  1. Gain Precision Shooting Techniques: Enhance shooting accuracy at long distances, engaging targets confidently from 100 to 600 yards.
  2. Confirm DOPE at Incremental Ranges: Gain familiarity with their firearm’s ballistic performance by confirming DOPE every 10 yards up to 200 yards.
  3. Complete the FBI 100-Yard Qualification: Complete the FBI’s 100-yard marksmanship qualification test.
  4. Engage Long-Range Targets: Develop confidence by utilizing environmental factors like wind and elevation to engage targets at 300, 400, 500, and 600 yards.
  5. Identify Targets Effectively: Improve target identification techniques, ensuring precise shots in dynamic and high-pressure situations.

FBI 100-Yard Qualification

Officers complete the FBI’s 100-yard qualification test for marksmanship.

09:45 - 10:30

DOPE Confirmation: 100 to 200 Yards

Officers confirm their rifle's DOPE every 10 yards, focusing on ballistic accuracy and consistency.

10:30 – 12:45

Target Engagement: 300 to 600 Yards

Engage targets at 300 to 600 yards, applying environmental factor considerations (wind, elevation, etc.).

12:45 - 01:00

Course Debrief & Wrap-Up

Final review of lessons learned, Q&A session, and course conclusion.

 

 Required Equipment

  • Rifle capable of engaging targets at 600 yards
  • Optic suited for precision shooting (variable power recommended)
  • 70 rounds of ammunition
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Note and DOPE book (data on previous engagements)

Grading and Certification

Officers will be assessed on their marksmanship during the FBI 100-yard qualification, DOPE confirmation, and target engagements at varying distances. Completing the course will result in a certificate, contingent on successfully engaging all required distances.
