Course Overview

This 4-hour Handgun Optic course is designed to enhance law enforcement officers' proficiency with optics-equipped handguns. Officers will learn sight alignment, quick reticle acquisition, and target engagement under stress. The course will improve officers' ability to use handgun optics effectively in various conditions, focusing on accuracy, speed, and decision-making during critical incidents.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, officers will:

  1. Improve Sight Alignment and Reticle Acquisition: Gain speed and accuracy in picking up the reticle from the holster and during presentations with one or both hands.
  2. Confirm Optic Zeroing: Learn how to confirm zero settings and understand the ballistic impact of optic placement on the handgun.
  3. Enhance Target Engagement Under Stress: Develop the ability to maintain sight picture and engage targets accurately under stress, including multiple threat scenarios.
  4. Incorporate Optics into Tactical Movements: Integrate handgun optics into tactical movements and rapid engagement from different positions.

Introduction & Safety Briefing

Overview of objectives, firearm safety, stretching.

09:30 - 10:15

Optic Zeroing & Confirmation

A hands-on session to confirm zero at appropriate distances and understand optic adjustments.

10:30 - 11:15

Reticle Acquisition & Target Engagement

Drills focus on drawing from the holster and quickly acquiring the reticle, including single- and two-handed shooting.

11:30 – 12:15

Engagement Under Stress

Stress drills simulate high-pressure environments with multiple targets and varying engagement distances.

12:15 - 12:45

Practice BLET Day – Pistol qualification

Practice the standard day BLET 50-round course of fire Officer skill reinforcement. 

12:45 - 01:00

Debrief & Course Wrap-up

Q&A session, course review, and feedback. Certificates of completion awarded.

 

Required Equipment

  • Handgun with mounted optic
  • 3 magazines (minimum)
  • 300 rounds of ammunition
  • Holster compatible with an optic-mounted handgun
  • Eye and ear protection

Grading and Certification

Officers will be evaluated on their proficiency in optic zeroing, reticle acquisition, target engagement, and decision-making under stress. Successful completion of the course will result in a certificate of completion.
