The Importance of Choosing the Right Paper Targets for Firearm Training

The Importance of Choosing the Right Paper Targets for Firearm Training

At Trace Armory Group, we believe that the tools you use in training are as important as the techniques you learn. Paper targets are a fundamental part of every shooting session, helping shooters of all levels develop accuracy, decision-making skills, and tactical awareness. In this blog, we’ll highlight three of the top targets we use during our training sessions, each designed to serve a unique purpose in building better shooters: the Discretionary Command Training Target, the VTAC Double-Sided Target, and the 4” Circles Target.

The Discretionary Command Training Target is a versatile tool, essential for improving a shooter’s decision-making under pressure. With three distinctive colors—red, yellow, & blue—this target is designed for command training. It forces trainees to react to specific commands, such as “shoot only the yellow target” or “engage all targets except the red,” challenging their ability to quickly process information and apply the appropriate action.

What I enjoy doing is using the shapes as well. So a command might be "Red Circle" the student shoots all the red and circle targets.

We use the DT-2C in our courses to simulate real-world scenarios where quick, correct decisions can make all the difference. Command-based drills are an excellent way to hone in on mental sharpness as well as physical shooting ability.

The Viking Tactics Double-Sided Target brings a tactical edge to the range. This 23” x 35” target offers a **dual-sided design** that provides multiple training options in one compact tool. On one side, you’ll find a **realistic anatomy silhouette**, which is perfect for simulating human targets during self-defense or law enforcement training. This side helps shooters work on shot placement in vital areas, enhancing both accuracy and tactical efficiency.

Flip the target over, and you have a completely different training opportunity. The reverse side is designed for **precision marksmanship drills**, encouraging shooters to focus on fine-tuning their aim and consistency. This versatile design allows you to seamlessly switch between scenarios, making it ideal for both rapid and precision shooting sessions. The VTAC target is a staple in our advanced training programs, offering the perfect combination of realism and skill-building.

One of our most commonly used tools for pistol and carbine training, the 4” Circles Target features twelve 4-inch circles with random letters and numbers scattered across the surface. You have alot of potions with this graphic.

First, as this video shows, you can learn mechanical offset for your PCC or Carbine.

Or you can work on shooting groups with a handgun. This setup adds a mental challenge to every shooting session, as trainees must engage specific targets based on verbal commands like “shoot the circle with the letter B” or “engage all even-numbered circles.”

This target isn’t just about precision; it’s also about improving cognitive function under stress. By requiring shooters to process information, locate the correct target, and take the shot, we’re conditioning them to think on their feet—critical in real-life defensive situations.

Why These Targets Matter
Using a variety of paper targets allows us to create a dynamic, well-rounded training environment at Trace Armory Group. These three targets in particular serve to challenge both the mind and the body, emphasizing quick decision-making, precision, and situational awareness. Whether you’re a new shooter learning the fundamentals or an experienced operator honing your tactical skills, incorporating these targets into your training routine will undoubtedly enhance your ability to perform under pressure.

At Trace Armory Group, we use these targets to help shooters understand that shooting isn't just about accuracy—it's about mental sharpness, awareness, and the ability to adapt to changing situations. The right target can turn a simple range session into a powerful learning experience.
